Replacing the cable is the right way to do it, but when I fitted a metric speedo head to my son's 81, the cable connector/clip wouldn't attach. I pulled as much slack as I could through the firewall, so the cable end was pressing against the speedo head, working from underneath, with the cluster in place. Yes, a ghetto fix, but it has stayed there and worked fine for 5 months and several thousand km's now without the clip.
