Contrary to Steve's opinion, I have years of experience-based success using Compression Unions to connect 3/16" brake lines. I would not hesitate to suggest them in your situation, if the line OD is compatible with standard CU sizes and you have enough working space. Splicing in an entire section, using a CU at each end might work too.

If you're not familiar with Comp. Unions, try Google, or this VW Brake Repair site.
