I have also done this. Followed Cam's instructions, called him a LOT, and learned a lot from people here. Now that Megasquirt and other aftermarket FI systems are becoming more affordable and widespread, I would likely go that route if I were to do it again. Regardless, there is no doubt in my mind that a properly running D-jet system is superior to most carb setups.
To answer your distributor question, you need a D-jet one, as it will contain the trigger contacts to tell the computer that the engine is running and at what speed. I think George covered everything else pretty well.
