Sputtering 240, fuel filter raplacement? 1988

i have an 88 240gl sedan, still held on to it for these couple of years (first car). over the past week it has given me some problems with sputtering. I was going home late one night and on the way the throttle dropped as if i let off the gas but i hadnt. very quick almost un-noticeable. The next couple of days i was driving to a friends and it did it again, i was like wth? i continued on for a another mile or so and it got to be horrible until it kept cutting off and not cranking. i let it sit and called my dad he came to pick me up and he decided to drive the volvo to see what was wrong. it drove him fine a couple miles to the house where it sat for 2 days. I drove it 3 days later no problems at all. The next day after that i was going to work and it started again just like it did when i was going to my friends, sputtering horribly, This time i didnt make it to work and it left me in the road. so 15.99 later here i sit with a fuel filter about to change it, i have no knowledge of a filter change previously, so i figure it wouldnt hurt. I had a friend change one of the pumps before beacause it leaked. its pretty safe to assume it is the fuel system right? any ideas? anything to check. maybe injectors? I did get shell gas the other day because i had too. also i filled up last week from the gas can we use with the mowers. maybe trash got in the tank? probably?

Volvo owner. First by force, now I want a 242 turbo.
