speedometer problems 200 1990

when i first got my car the speedometer worked fine, then a couple of weeks later it suddenly started doubling whatever speed i was driving, so if i was going 40 it would say i was going 80. well after a few weeks of that it just stopped working altogether. any ideas on what happened and how i can fix it?
