I know there were a couple different size U-joints (along with a couple different drive shaft and carrier bearing diameters) used that year. I've not heard of using the reference he describes, but that's not to say it isn't an approprate method. It certainly is an easy way to ID your particular configuration, if in fact he's right.

BTW - Unless you're hell-bent on using OEM u-joints, they're readily available from most auto parts stores.
