What comes to mind quickly:
Condition of the main wiring harness. 1987 is not a "safe" year.
Ignition. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor.
Condition of the in-tank pump hose connection. Question raised as you say it started failing on an uphill run. How full was the tank?
Condition of the 25-amp fuse holder. Corroded? Full of crud and corruption?
Just flinging ideas at your wall, one might stick.
Engine temp readings. The temp compensation board is supposed to remove the spikes in temp due to the operation of the thermostat. After a while it takes over the system, giving readings of whatever it feels like at the time - no relationship to reality.
This will not affect the engine operation in any way - unless it is really overheated, and there are other symptoms of that.
Good Luck,
Bob
