IMO, the pulley is most often removed to replace the timing belt.
I guess your slit method would be OK, but how can you see the Primary 0° reference marks on the crank sprocket and seal carrier. With the lower guard removed, the Secondary (offset) 0° reference notch on the pulley is no help.
I suppose if you line up TDC 0° before slitting and removing the guard, there is probably not much danger of the crank moving. How hard is it to get the belt on the crank sprocket with the pulley and guide washers in place?
