Engine turns but won't start 700 1986

Yesterday I got into my 1986 740 and it ran rough (quite unusual) for about 20 seconds and shut off. When I tried to restart the engine turned but no start. Being in a hurry I took the wife's car. Today I went out to diagnose the problem and the engine turns and then there is a clunking sound and it stops. It did this twice and I stopped trying. Can anyone help me with this. Is it something I can repair my self or do I need to send it to a shop? I am mechanically inclined. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 beibg the best I am about a 7.5. Please help.
