Assuming your spare wheel covers in the US are the same as those in Europe (which I think they are) there would seem to be no reason at all for using the space saver donut - other than cost saving.

The overall diameter of the tyre should be kept the same regardless of the rim size - so a larger rim needs a lower profile tire. The standard wagon wheel (no pun intended) - a 185, fits easily in the space, having to be tilted an held by the jack, so there's probably room for a 205 or possibly an even wider tire, and I can't imagine you'd want wider than that.
