It sounds like you fixed the starting problem?
It won't hurt to run a bottle of Techron fuel cleaner made by Chevron through your gas tank. I just got a used '87 245 and it didn't like to start right away while cranking and I put the Techtron in and it starts right away now.
I don't know if all or any of your other questions got answered or not; if not keep posting.
