As for performance I can't give an objective opinion, I haven't driven a 16v any distance. Too much heat with a turbo? Well, there certainly is more heat, so things like vacuum hoses are not going to last as long. But I'd still opt for the turbo, given the interchangeability of components with the ubiquitous B230. I'd rather take my chances on having to pay full price for a turbo core, instead of needing a motor if I shear an oil pump bolt. For a scrapyard-scouring DIYer like myself, the turbo is an easier car to deal with. Really, though, it's a matter of opinion (and availability!).
