acceleration and turbo problems 700

i recently replaced the engine (with a low mileage salvage yard engine) on my '87 760 turbo and since then have had nothing but trouble.

the acceleration is horrible and the turbo needs to work overtime to compensate for the bad acceleration. i know the replacement engine was working great in the old car (the car was junked because of a bad ECU). Since it was a salvage yard engine I figured the injectors and maybe the rail was clogged so i changed them, but it made no difference. the exhaust still smells of bad gas 800 miles after having changed the engine (the car waited a year in storage to get its engine changed). A mechanic checked the AMM and vacuum lines and told me they were fine. Fuel pressure is ok. I'm really clueless on this one.

As an added bonus now...i recently replaced the hose from the turbo to the bypass valve and also the exhaust manifold. After it got replaced turbo pressure would get up to a certain point (There was boost) but then it would hit a wall and if i pushed it harder i would just hear a 'pop' noise until the boost went back down. At first I figured that it was just that the pressure from the boost was too much for the cheap plastic clamp i put on temporarily. However in the week since that repair i've had the coolant hose to the turbo break 3 times, each when I let it pop a few times too often, so I figure the pop is maybe coming from the coolant hose letting some coolant go until it finally breaks (which i guess means that the turbo is getting too hot...). But I dont see why the hose is breaking so often...i mean for that there must be some incredible pressure and overheating which doesnt match up with the type of driving that i do with the car...

if anyone has any ideas on what could be causing my acceleration and turbo problems please let me know...

fred
