Diesel needs 4th gear switch

My 1991 diesel needs a new OD 4th gear switch. I believe from reading on here it is possible to change without removing the gearbox. Is the switch a Volvo only part? and could one possibly just wire this switch out. What would happen if this was done and the gearstick button pushed in when only in say 1st gear?
