1990 740 won't idle/sometimes won't start

My car is having weird problems. When I start it up I have to gas it a little bit or it will just fail to idle and die. After it dies I have to leave it sit for a good 30 mins before I can try and start it up again or else it doesn't even try to start up. I took off and cleaned out the idle control valve and that faield to resolve my issue. Can an idle control valve go bad? I am leaning towards the rpm sensor but i figured I would post for some input.
