Advice Please re: 89 745 5.0/AOD

Hi all,

My 1989 745 conversion is done !!!

A couple of questions:

1. I need a power steering pump. I have a stock 1990 5.0 HO w/AOD,3.73 rear, DOT 5 w/ ss lines. The PS pump's yowling, otherwise it works fine. I assume there's no cure for The Whine, so...Is there a heavy duty model, like for a 5.0 police application ? Or would this one likely to be noisier ? If a stock Ford item works best , I'm fine with that. I just need to know the best place to get one...

2. Strut braces, upper and lower: Of course, nothing from IPD will fit. Any suggestions ? Does anyone out there make them for a 5.0/745 conversion ? Car tracks straight, although I do feel some "give" when braking hard, like something needs to be tightened or ?? Steering's not loose, performs smoothly.

3. Experiencing a minimal but irritating shudder/thump as I move from a stop. I assume this is the center bearing or a U joint ? This happens only on takeoff, only for a couple of seconds.Driveline seems pretty tight, I don't have any problems at speed. Can this be adjusted or do I need to replace something ?

Just FYI: The suspension is stock , save for poly strut rod bushings and IPD sway bars. Wheels are 16" Hydras w/ 205 Michelin Harmony tires. I wanted a conservative daily driver... Overall, I like it !! I will eventually go for Bilsteins, but for now I'd be happy to get the strut brace issue solved.

The car rides much flatter w/ the sway bars, and I don't really feel the 130 or so extra pounds up front. But then, Im not flinging it through the turns ( I'd like to work on that over time, though ). It has a normal, level stance.

No outward evidence of the 5.0 except for side by side LX tips right where the stock Volvo exhaust normally exits.

I have a 1985 765T for parts, along w/ a B230FT and other misc . items for sale or trade...

I appreciate any and all comments and suggestions !

Sincerely,

Bill Kelly

I'm not done, but it is drivable. I still have several little issues to resolve, but most of the big stuff seems to be working.

1. I had a bad power steering pump so I got a rebuilt one from Autozone. It is quiet and the steering seems quicker and easier than with the Volvo pump.

2. Don't know.

3. I had a lot of shuddering and vibrating from a stop up to about 20 mph. Raising the transmission mount seems to have gotten rid of about 99% of it.

Please send me the pictures.

Mike

I installed the IPD upper and lower braces on my '88 740 with the 5.0 conversion. The upper bar interferes by just a bit with the vaccuum line that runs from the oil fill tube to the intake. But your swap maybe different from mine. The guy that did mine actually did the cut/reweld swap for better fitment.

I can't say as I feel a difference, but I installed ipd springs and bil hd's at the same time. Haven't yet installed my front and rear ipd anti-sway bars, that's next when I have time.

I don't know about the strut braces, since I haven't purchased any yet, but I imagine if you talk to someone from Cherry Turbo they could help you out.
I use an AGR power steering pump I purchased at Summit and it works fine without being noisy - at least I can't hear it over the V8 rumble!LOL.
I had a shudder when accelerating from a stop even with the 4 cylinder. It helps sometimes to shim the centre support bearing either up or down - you have to experiment. A new centre support may also be due, but what I found totally eliminated ALL slack was having the two large trailing arm bushings replaced with Delrin plastic bushings. I was pleasantly surprised to feel no additional vibration either.
Over all though,I too would like a tighter, stiffer structure. I have the IPD bars, Bilsteins, coils and end links from Eurosport Tuning, but it still actually leans more that I would like. With gasoline reaching $1.15 per liter($4.35 per US gallon Canadian)today, I'm thinking I'd better get back on my carbon fiber racing bicycle(my former life). It has a nice rigid frame. LOL.

BTW - I meant torque rod bushings, not trailing arm.

Do you have any measurements to make more bushings? And are there different grades of Delrin? So you just did the ends where the torque rods attach to the axle, then?

Thanks,
Greg

Yes, the setup on the 700 series is much different, and there's a lot more polyurethane available for the 240. Here you can see the two bushing locations circled. It's not my car, but just for illustration.

I could be wrong Greg, but I believe the rear end suspension on his 700 and your 200 are entirely different. You have parallel upper/lower control arms -- locating arms on the bottom; torque arms on the top. He has lower locating arms, and a single torque arm that mounts in the center of the rear axle near the bottom of it, and runs up a couple of feet to a mounting point offset a bit to the side of the driveshaft. I believe the bushings he's speaking of are for the lower control arms.

If you want torque arm bushings for yours, you can buy two adjustable torque arms with poly bushings for about $125 from IPD.

Yeah, those IPD torque rods for the 240 are on my shopping list, but I also have a 940 Turbo which I need to firm up. The 700/900 actually has 2 torque rods like the 240, but they are above and below the axle. Have you seen the pics of the 700 subframes? There are guys making really nice replacement subframes for those cars which are stronger.

Sorry Greg, I don't have measurements. It was a local race car builder that made them, so he did all the measuring. I do know that he turned them on a lathe, and it cost just under 400 Canadian. I consider it money well spent, because as I said, it virtually eliminated the shudder. I don't know if Delrin is available in a different durometer, but mine seem essentially solid, which is fine with me. Perhaps vibration would be more of an issue in the front suspension, but I have nothing negative to say about it in this application.
Yes, they're the large, "butterfly" shaped bushings that attach to the axle on the 700 series. Of course, having rubber bushings that large gives a lot of opportunity for excess flex.
