After more than 60k miles since V8 conversion, the 'pumpkin' (rear end) has finally given up the ghost. The car is an '86 745T with 5.0 and AOD with shift kit, solid axle, non LSD. So it shifts (ahem) rather firmly. There are over 300k miles on the car, I'm pretty sure the axle is original.
I noticed a bit of a clunk, then it seemed to freewheel, then catch. I jacked the rear wheels off the ground and turned the driveshaft by hand. The wheel spun for a quarter turn or so, then no resistance. The 'U' joints appear to be fine.
I would imagine it will cost more to rebuild mine than to buy a used one. I'm seeking suggestions as to whether I should look for a direct replacement axle which I think has a 3.73 ratio. Or maybe try to find one with LSD.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks,
