Oil Temperature Sender Location

I want to hook up the engine oil temp gauge to my 5.0L. Is there a convenient place to install the sender? I don’t want to drop the pan just to install a bung. Is it possible to modify the (unused) low oil sender on the side of the pan to accept the temp sender? Or is there a way to modify the drain plug to accept the sender? The Ford drain has a ½ 20 thread so it isn’t compatible with the NPT threaded adapters from VDO.
The only posts I have found on the Mustang boards indicate that you have to install an oil cooler to provide a location for the sender.
What have others done? Any creative ideas?
Thanks,
TR Conn
