few questions on engines

So what's the difference between all the small block chevy motors? Like what's the difference between the ZZ-4 and the LT1 and the TPI setups, and can you make them all 383?

Yeah, and I definitely agree with starting with a good shell. I originally had an 83 245T (not in great shape) that I was going to do the conversion with, but I am so glad that I went with a clean 90 245 instead. And it's not even expensive to find a nice 90-93 240 or up to a 95 940 to use for a shell, so there's no excuse.
