engine died suddenly

1992 745 b230 170,xxx about miles
This has happened twice in the past serveral months, and can be very scary:

When driving down the road, the engine suddenly and completely stops, no warning lights or anything, just quit. I pulled over to the side, luckily, and both times, after I waited about 30 seconds figuring out what to do, the engine starts up and runs just fine.

Happend once with my wife, and now she will not even get into the car until it is definitely fixed.

Otherwise the car runs and drives great, with what I used to think was a minor occasional momentary stumble. Now I am thinking that they may be related, but am stymied on where to start looking. Ignition switch or coil?

I keep the car in good tune, and manage about 26-28 mpg.

I would appreciate any thoughts anyone may have.
Thanks, Steve Martinsen in CT. Summer is finally here!
