engine died suddenly

Have you ever replaced your fuel pump relay? The relays are behind the fusebox, look in the 700/900 FAQ for more details. These relays can develop cracks in the solder, leading to intermittent fuel pump shut off. If you know how to solder, resolder the joints in this relay (also do the overdrive relay). The FAQ will have more info on this relay and the related problems.

That is a very common problem, with some luck, it may fix your problem. But if you say it has only happened a couple of times in several months, you might not know for a while if your car is fixed. Well, I suppose if there are cracks in your solder joints, you can feel pretty good about this fix working.
