When driving down the road try aggressively jiggling the key in the ignition switch. I've had two ignition switch failures in European cars and the symptoms were similar to yours. Usually a bump in the road precipitated the shut down. Took me a while to figure it out. On both, once discovered, I could recreate the failures by playing with the ignition key while running.
