AC update questions

Thanks for the suggestions!

Since the FPC hoses are "no name," I think I'll stay with Volvo hoses as they're a "known commodity."

Michael, I'd really like to see the HVAC unit you're talking about building--but for now I think I'll stick with the Volvo system--but the stuff you do with your car is always interesting (fan controller, fans, exhaust, etc.). When you get done, be sure to post a few pictures.

Regarding the newer Volvo system, I have one of the newer systems in our 91 244--and for comparison, a R-134-converted 83 244ti. Both cool well--much better than our wagon. Volvo's conversion kit includes a new evaporator (larger), expansion valve, hi-side hose, seals, receiver/dryer, etc. The converted system works about as well as the newer systems with the big accumulator.

I'm more concerned with peoples' experience with the Ford compressor and clutch--how long they last, etc. I'm figuring if I'm going to go through all of the trouble to update it to 134--and if the compressor is within a year or two of it's expected life--than I'll go ahead do it. On the other hand, if the compressors and clutches last a while, then I may put them off for now.

Thanks again for the advice--I'll let you know how it turns out (though it'll be a few weeks before I can get to it).

Best regards,

Steve A-

BTW, there's an interesting article on the Griffiths website about AC work they did on an old 911 ("Mr. Ice" or something)--AC air temps of 35 degrees or less. Pretty cool! (no pun intended)
