Smog crossover tube

OK,let me rephrase the question.
On the 1990 Mustang 5.0 HO there is a crossover tube which attaches to the back of each head,then to the anti-backfire valve, etc. I thought there should be some kind of gasket between the head and each tube attachment, but when I removed it I found nothing, so I assume it's not necessary.
Can anyone enlighten me?
