JC - have seen your posts re. the new 764/5.0 on Turbobricks . You mean your not going to re-hab the trans with your 16yo son? Well, I guess I might have to get mine rebuilt by a pro if it crapped out just for the peace of mind, don't want to have to do it twice.
Anyway, to answer your Q re. best transmission, if I had to replace my AOD it would be with a Lentech street AOD of some flavor. Their bottom of the line AOD replacement is on sale for $1300 or step up to the electric lock-out OD model at $2000. (The 760's shifter button would be perfect for the OD lockout switch.) Great quality but pricey, eh? www.lentechautomatics.com
I had my valve body replaced with a TransGo kit and wish I had gone with Baumann Engineering, as the latter kit provides a way to delay upshifts in all gears, and my 3 to 4 shift happens way too soon, usually after only ~300 rpm climb in 3rd, into 4th at around 40 mph. There are a few ebay transmission rebuilders who advertise Baumann kits in their rebuilds, so you might check them out if you just want a new unit.
Hope this helps. -Boozer
