peeling clear coat 850

Any suggestions on what to do, about 1/3 of the clear coat is gone, washing and waxing resluts in all green rags and towels.
The car runs good (140K) and looks bad, but I don't want to spend $1500 on a fullup paint job, the other end of the spectrum would an Earl Schieb $250 special, and that may end up with the it looking even worse. Many a light colred clothing hass been ruined by leaning against thae car for moire than a few seconds

thanks

GP Sandhoo

Someone posted a while back about an Earl Schieb paint job. He said he left a window part way down and they painted part of the dash! : ) He sure has gone up! When I was a kid back in the 60's, I think I recall his add saying "Earl Schieb will paint any car for $49.95" (including the bumpers)

My dad has a 91 740 with what appears to be clear coat peeling on a corner of the hood. Would a 91 even have clear coat?

Earl Scheid $49.,99? You are a kid! :-). My first car ( '61 Valiant) was $29.99..but then I upgraded to the metalic paint at $39.99. That's some tough glop they sprayed, I'd hesitate to call it paint though. If that car still exists, I bet thathouse fly is STILL painted onto the rear fender. In fact if that Valiant has been recycled, your new car may have that same fly stuck to it!

Now that you mention it, I think it was $29.99. He used to have a huge sign on Broad St. in Richmond Va. next to a sign from a used car thief called "Mad Man Dapper Dan" who said "I would give um away but my wife won't let me".

I checked both of mine...not a fly in sight : )

G,

Was the car ever repainted?

Is the "peeling" on only certain panels or all over the car?

Never heard of that happening to an 850/70 factory finish.

Plan on spending at least $3,000., depending on where you live, for an average quality re-spray.

Car has the original paint, has not been repainted, and the it is coming in in various areas ( the hood) B pillars, roof and part of the trunck

think 1995 is when most europeans went to water based paints, i am sure there were growing pains before all the quirks were ironed out

thanks for the input

Sorry, but if the clear coat is gone the car needs to be repainted. Find a reputable paint/collision shop and start asking for quotes. You will save some money by removing the trim yourself, but not a lot. The Earl Shieb method does not remove ANY trim and looks like what you pay for it. Insist on OEM color so that the underside of the hood, engine bay, and door panels will be the exact match.

Never seen this happening on any '90's plus cars let alone an 850. Common problem during the '70's though. Where do you live? Are you in the acid rain belt? What kind of car wash do you do? Yourself or car wash service? If you do it yourself what products do you use? There's not much of an "in between" paint jod. It's either the Sheib/Maaco/One Day or the $1000 plus. The extra cost of good paint doesn't really add that much to the final cost. It's all the correct prep time that adds up. Without proper prep cleaning, sanding, etc the paint job won't last. You have to properly get ALL of the old clearcoat off before you repaint or it's just going to keep on degrading. Think of it as a Christmas present.

It's really not that uncommon! Our '94 started peeling anout 6 months after we bought it (used). The teal seems to go "wrong" a lot more on all the Volvos I see around here, and every teal one is bad. Blue holds up OK, black, white, silver are good. Green seems to be bad almost as much as teal. This is western NC, and we do get all the sulfurous pollution from the coal fired TVA power plants, plus we get all that stinkin' smell from local paper mills(though them made BIG strides in their pollution controls)and it can't be good.

The Car lived for 8 years in Houston, and now 2 more in Washington DC area.

Pleanty of pollutants in the air, and the harsh sun in Texas. Of course when we moved at the first cold snap the headliner dropped

thanks for the input

nothing beats a good paint job 850

If it were my car and it ran well, I would bite the bullet and have it done right. Otherwise go for the low ball and be disappointed. Think of it this way: "my air conditioning might have gone out and it could have cost the same to repair."
