timing belt replacement question V70-XC70 1999

I am going to do the timing belt/tensioner/pulley and was wondering what if any seals I should purchase that would be easy to replace when doing the job. I see on FCP Groton that there is a right cam seal, a left cam seal, and a rear cam seal. The car has 80k on it, but thought if I was already in there replacing the belt that I could also do the seals on that side. Thanks in advance!

Why would you want to replace the T-belt now rather than at 105K miles? Is it showing signs of wear? Check the accessory belt, that may need changing if you are looking for work.
I would not replace the cam seals unless your engine is leaking profusely, and then I would first suspect the manifold pressure to be too high.

Thank you Klaus. I was going to change the timing belt because it has been eight years, and I heard that it was a 7 year belt. Should I put it off?

Inspect the belt for hairline cracks and other wear. These belts are pretty tough.

          Klaus,

When you say hairline cracks . . . what's your opinion of fine cracking on the outer surface of the belt? My car's 6 years old, but only at 110000 km, not 170000 km.

            Albert,
Canadian winters are a bit tough on the belt. It will probably be "crazed", but if there are any long, 2-5cm cracks, then I suggest you replace it. You could gamble and wait until 160Km and another 4 years, but if you loose...
Get a local mechanic to check it out. You could take off the cover before he looks at it to save him some time. Make sure he knows what a 5 cylinder Volvo engine is all about.

It is fine checking, not real cracks, but I have a new belt and tensioner waiting in the garage . . . waiting for the garage floor to warm up a bit. Ice stopped forming on it a few days ago, so things are improving.

I'm also waiting to hear the outcome of non-running engine saga before I proceed. I'm guessing that turning the camshafts of a VVT engine without the belt in place creates problems. I also checked the IPD website and discovered that their handy locking tool is for pre-VVT engines.

I figure about mid-April before the garage is warm enough :)

I believe that aligning the timing marks BEFORE removing the T-belt will make all the difference. And just cutting off the old T-belt makes sense if you are going to replace the tensioner anyway.

I, too, am waiting on the verdict of the T-belt mishap. The local dealer quoted me $300 in labor, FCP Groton wants around $300 in parts for my 1998, so the total dealer charge would be around $700. Lots of bucks for a car I plan to sell this summer.

timing belt replacement question V70-XC70 1999

The job is done. I took several hours, but have concluded that it's really quite straightforward. There actually is adequate room to work (even for my oversize hands) as long as the coolant and power steering reservoirs are out of the way. No bolts and screws left over, and the car runs fine. There is one difference; I hear more noise from the front of the engine while driving, but maybe the new serpentine belt needs to wear in a bit.

Really, the hardest part was getting the new serpentine belt on. My car requires a 14mm wrench to work the tensioner; I ended up tying a piece of 1/4" nylon rope to the wrench to pull on after I got the box end on the tensioner bolt.

I could imagine experienced techs doing a basic timing belt and tensioner change in about an hour.

I like the "rope" trick :)

There should be no additional noise from the engine. Double check the tensioner settings. You don't want it to be too tight.

Checked the belt, and it was good. I will replace it at 100k. Thanks!
