Can dirty brake fluid ruin ABS sensors? 850 1996

I am about to do the brakes on an '96 850 for the first time, and I have a question about the ABS sensors.

I have heard (on other cars) that when you push the caliper back into the piston, the dirty brake fluid can ruin the ABS sensor, The remedy for this is to use a clamp to prevent the brake fluid from affecting the ABS sensor.

Does this apply to the 850? I read the procedure here on the board several times and saw no mention of it.

Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

Not an expert on this, but my understanding is that any dirt/particles in the old fluid can cause problems with the control unit NOT the sensors. The control unit has various components which modulate the pressure applied to the calipers, it's these components which can be damaged. I think if you change fluid regularly then it should never get bad enough to cause this sort of harm.

Many sources recommend replacing brake fluid entirely every few years on ABS systems. Should there be moisture or contamination in the fluid it will degenerate seals. The debris that results will migrate thru the system and can block ABS components and cause sticky calipers. I had this on one car and it was very difficult to correct.

ANSWER Can dirty brake fluid ruin ABS sensors? 850 1996

Your answer is no. BUT, dirty brake fluid can affect your braking capabilities. So I would suggest you flush the entire system sooner than later.

Please answer your responses. We need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)

Thank you! That is good to know.

I bought the pressure bleeder and new fluid from FCP Groton and I will get the Volvo pads and rotors, I will let everyone know how it goes.

I would encourage flushing brake fluid every couple of years. I am quite convinced that regular fluid flushes extend the life of brake hydraulic components significantly, to the point that it should be possible to have the original calipers and master cylinder last the life of the car. I got about 425000 km (265,000 miles) out of the original front calipers on my 740, and never replaced the rear calipers or the master cylinder.
