help! screeching after starting the engine

I just left the store for a few minutes and came back to start the car then the awful screeching sound started and let it ran 5 miles to reach home and can smell burning. Could this be the auxiliary fan went bad or other horrible stories for this car. Then I let my wife started it tonight to make sure that the engine is cold and fan does not kick-in but again the screeching sound is still there. Does the fan turn-on once you start the car?
Thanks for the help, hope to fix before deciding to bring to volvo shop.

Sounds like the serpentine belt. Open the hood and check the passenger side of the engine. It may be the AC compressor has frozen or one of the idler pulleys stopped moving and the belt is dragging across it.

thanks for the input. I'll take off the serpentine belt in the morning and check the idler pulleys.

Can you describe the burning smell? Like burning rubber or something else? Any vibration? What was the weather?

sorry forget to answer all the questions. There were no vibration or to what I notice, feels like the same vibration except the noise. Kind of scary because the screech sound is like coming from within the engine. Don't take me literal.
The weather was around 72 not that warm and cold, just right.

the burning scent was a bit plastic(electrical?)and a bit close to rubber. thanks.
