Need help diagnosing a problem V70-XC70

My wife has experienced engine trouble this morning. When she excels up to 35mph, around 20-25 mph the engine seems to "buck" as it is switching gears. Same thing happens when you slow to a stop from about 30 mph. Any thoughts?

1998 V70 T5

Thanks in advance.

You need to determine if it is the tranny or the engine. Check the tranny fluid when it is hot, for color(red) and level. The engine may have a dirty throttle body, and/or dirty idle air control, which may not help either.

Good on the tranny fluid, I flushed it myself not to long ago. I drove the car myself this morning, same thing is happening, but now when I come to a complete stop, the engine dies. Does these problems sound like a dirty throttle body/air control?

      Thanks in advance!

No, it sounds more like a torque converter lockup problem. If you shift to N before stopping and the engine rpm stays at normal, that is what the problem is. Newer models, 99->, can be reprogrammed at the dealer. The 1998 is usually related to dirt in the throttle position sensor or the PNP switch.

You hit it again. My indy mechanic says the same thing, torque converter problem. He says to take it to the dealer, but is this a fix I can do I my garage? It's a 98

          thanks in advance

The torque converter lockup is electro mechanical and driven by the TCU. It uses speed sensor to determine if lockup should occure.
Best diagnosed by the $tealer, there should be codes. It is not the end of the tranny.

Is the car safe to drive until I can get it into the dealer? I'm leaving for a week and my wife has no car. If I replace the PNP/throttle control switch, will it be good to go?

              Thanks

Just replacing the PNP or throttle position sensor MAY fix it, but it might be something else entirely. Have your wife shift to N when coming to a stop so it doesn't stall.
Rowing the shifter from R to L about 20 times, with the key in pos II and engine off, usually clears the PNP for a while. The speed sensor data flows through the PNP and a good diagnosis will determine whether it is the sensor or not.

Dealer says it is the thermostat/thermo control valve that is sticking and putting into "limp home" mode. does this sound legit?

There is a tranny fluid temp sensor, or oil temp sensor. But I have never heard of a "thermo control valve".
The temp sensor is used to automatically down shift the tranny when it gets too hot, usually because of a heavy load and going up hill in 4th. If the sensor fails, it will put the car into limp home mode. But it should not cause the torque converter to remain coupled and cause the engine to die.

I would have the dealer service "tech" clear all of the codes, then drive the car and retrieve the codes again after the engine dies or tranny flutters.
