My wife unlocked our 97, got in, shut the door, and the locks snapped down and the lights began flashing. But the alarm did not go off. Normally when you lock it the lights only flash once. She said they didn't stop. She had to get out and lock and unlock the car with the remote to get them to quit. Yesterday I unlocked it, turned around to do something, and they locked on their own accord. Problem seems intermittent. What's wrong, and is there an easy fix? Weather has been cold and nasty, and two weeks ago the locks were frozen because I'd taken it through a carwash to get all the salt off. But now the weather is in the mid forties F. Dick

If you unlock the driver's door with the remote but do not open the door, it will re-lock itself after 30 seconds. Then, if you are like me and have the window down, reach in and unlock the door from the inside handle - the alarm goes off!!
I have also been known to grab the remote too hard while getting in and have contact made while sitting down. The flashers go off and the doors lock! And my wife gets pissed because she is locked out of the passenger side. Just a quick unlock on the remote and all is well.
Remotes. Love/hate relationship.

Hi Klaus! Thanks for replying. I knew it would lock itself but not within thirty seconds. I think what happened is that water somehow shorted one of the locks, which would make the lights continue to flash off and on instead of just once. I shot some CRC, electronic cleaner in the key holes tonight and will wait and see if they are still erratic. WD-40, as someone suggested, I think counter productive, as the oil is a conductor. If they still act erratic I don't have the least idea where to begin to look for the problem. I imagine some sensor or server buried beneath the dash someplace. Dick

CRC will probably work too but the "WD" in WD-40 stands for "Water Displaceing". Don't know about it's conductivity properties but I've never had any problems putting it into any of my locks. Just don't overdo it. We went through a period when our alarm/doorlock sytem would go bonkers once in a while and I finally figured out it happened if the handle was used at the same time the door was trying to unlocking itself. You just can't be in too much of a hurry to get in. I've since quit using the remote entirely. Just use the key. It's just a personal quirk.

Wne I get into my 1998 with the keyfob in the right hand, I manage to compress the remote and push the lock button. The lights flash for a long time like the hazzard button being pushed, probably because the door is still open, and continue to flash after the door is closed.
I don't think water from a carwash will penetrate the door enough to get ice inside the actual locking mechanism. If it did, my car would be parked from December to March! The lock cylinder is frozen and will stay that way until spring.

Klaus--believe me, water will get into those locks from a car wash, the kind we have over here. You have horizontal jets that spray violently against the sides, and it forces water into the locks. I've parked it afterwards and had both front door locks frozen solid the next morning. The lock on the back door (wagon) was not frozen because that has a little protective flap over it. I had to crawl in the back and over the seats to hit the lock button on the dash. This is what happens when one of your remote quits working and your wife at work has the only one that works. Interesting about that remote though. I ordered two new ones, took the one remote that did work and one of the new ones, turned the key five times and then depressed the buttons on both remotes at the same time, but I could never get both of them programmed to the same frequency. You could do one, or the other, but not together. Dick
P.S. Do you know when Volvo switched from the old AWD system with the faulty bevel gear to the newer and supposedly better? A Volvo service manager I asked was vague about it. It apparently wasn't when they made the body change in 2001, but sometime later. A friend of mine is thinking of buying a 2002 AWD but wants to avoid the one with bevel gear problems.

The cylinder the key goes into will freeze after a spray car wash. There is a special lub that will not freeze, but nothing but heat will unfreeze the lock cylinder. Thank goodness for remotes.
As for your remotes not working, it is your procedure that is at fault. After 5 turns of the key, watch the red light on the dash. It will come on solid and then you push a button on ONE of the remotes, then flash for a few seconds and become solid again, then you press the next remote button. Up to 3 remotes can have their frequency stored.
The Haldex awd replacement came in 02 or 03, whenever Volvo ran out of the old units. To be safe, I would tell your friend to start with 03 and go as new as he can. They still need the bevel gear oil replaced at 60K intervals. And the front tire treads must be equal to or greater the rear tires.

Klaus--thanks for correcting me on the procedure for programming the remotes! The parts manager at Volvo Houston, where I ordered the two new remotes last year, told me that if I wanted to program two remotes for the same vehicle, that I had to turn the key five times and then press down on the button on each remote simultaneously until the red light on the dash stopped blinking. This seemed to make sense to me, and I tried it and it didn't work. Now I know why. Dick

Maybe try spraying a little WD-40 into all the key slots?
