Best next Volvo 850

Hey Brickers,

I want you input. We are looking to get another Volvo and trying to decide which one. Our 850 GLT wagon should be a little over 300K now and is still solid as a rock! This will be for my wife and after 2 years, is always ready for another car(for 17 years now). We have been looking at V70, S60 and S80's. Looking in the 2001~2003 model years. We do not want AWD, just FWD. We normally purchase our cars a five to six years old and 100~130K on them to avoid major depreciation hits.

After she drives it 2 years, it will probably become my daughter's who will be 16 then. Up to this point I do all the repair and maintenance on our cars(with the help of y'all as we say here in the south) and realize when I get into the '01 and up models, this may not be the case.Dealer is 1 hour away.

My question is which one of these models will be the best bang for the buck? I don't mind fixing little things, but want to avoid major engine or transmisson problems. Always try to buy from a person to confirm service history.

Now, I will sit back and await the wisdom of my fellow Brickster's! Thanks.

Keith

    Keith,

I'd like to ask you this- did you purchase your 850 new? If you did then I admire you for keeping the car up for 12 years. 300k+ miles, wow! That's wonderful- I have definitely seen some very high-mileage '96 850s but I've never seen or heard about one with over 300k. I think you're the first.

I too own a '96 850- however, my car has but a mere 85k on it. I used to drive it on a regular basis but it's now confined to being driven only on special occasions, which is like every eight weeks or so. I really do need to quit subjecting the 850 to prolonged periods of storage.

I bought the car with 180K on it about 6 years ago. The owner had all service records and oil changes. It has been a great car. A starter, O2 sensor, CV boots and fuel pump are the only failures. Plus regular mantenance.

It has a slight leak in the steering rack and uses about a quart of oil in 5K.

Oh yeah, the AC quit last summer, haven't fixed it yet. Want to keep it till 500K miles!

      Klaus,
Would like to stay with the Volvo, have gotten pretty familiar with it and how to work on it, get good prices on parts and of course this board!. If I switch to Mercedes, my wife would not object, I would just have to go through a leaning curve on the maintenance and wrenching.

      Thanks for the input.

Because this car is for your wife and eventually your daughter:
A Mercedes E or C with a small 6 cyl engine. All of the safety and more comfort than a Volvo. A very quiet interior on the E models.

    I still miss my 164 and my 854T. Just driving a V70R :)

There are plenty of S80s in your price range, but that is because the need a lot of work (electronic) just to keep running.
I would opt for a V70, just because the back seat has more legroom verses the S60. The newer the better, except 2008 which gets the 6 cylinder 3.2L gas hog.

You probably won't like my answer. None of the newer Volvo's are as good as the older ones in my opinion. I would look for a used 8 series or 9 series with low mileage, spend some money on it and drive it.

My sister has an S60. It looks nice, it drives sort of 'generically' if you know what I mean, it does not feel as solid as my old 850.

I'm interested in what others think....
