Compression Check V70-XC70 2001

I just finished my 90K mile service, and while I had the plugs out considered doing a compression check to get a "baseline" reading while all is healthy and running excellent. My old school technique would have been to remove all the plugs, disconnect the coil wire, and open the throttle wide open and crank until the reading is stable.

With my 01 V70 T5, there is no coil wire, and was unsure what to do so I wouldn't collect a code, and with the electronic throttle, was unsure if pushing on the peddle would be the equivalent as the old carb type engines to open it all the way up.

Can someone who knows the system better than I do, please give me the correct procedure with these newer engines so I won't do damage the next time I change the plugs and do a compression check?

Compression Check V70-XC70 2001

No advice onyone? So my guess is to put the plugs back in the harness so they fire to not stress the coils, and assume the throttle will work too. It would have been nice to hear this with someone who has done this before, as I was concerned with it giving me some codes, and having difficulity clearing the codes.

Don't even sweat getting a code or two. You can always disconnect the battery for a minute or two to clear them or stop by an autoparts store to clear them.

These engines really don't need a baseline check. It is either going to be good or you will have one cyl down that will give you a misfire code soon enough.

You could pull the CPSensor wire which will turn off the spark and result in only one code. The code should go away after the CPS is plugged back in.

If you really want to work on your car and it is not giving you any problems, investigate how to put 2 small lights in the engine bay that are only on when the hood is up. Then post back with pics :)

Thanks for the reply Klaus. I went out to look for the COSensor wire, and couldn't locate anything that looked likely. I searched the forums and also had no luck :-(( What should I be looking for to disconnect the CPS?

My 01 V70 T5 is running beautiful, so I do like to tinker, so the idea of installing an under the hood light is appealing. Unfortunately, I'm just getting ready to go on vacation, so it will have to wait until mid November. I did take a quick look and noted some likely mounting areas for a switch, power source, and wire routing. I'll need to check around to see what might be a good light source. I'm thinking something like a dome light whose base would attach, and you could easily remove a cover to change the bulb when required.

If other forum members are tracking this, any suggestions for locating this kind of light fixture would be appreciated. I'm hoping the local Auto Zone will have something along this line, but I love to recycle parts from U-Pull It when possible.

BTW, I kept my old fuel filter from when I did the 90K mile service, and opened it up today to see just how much crap might be in there. To my surprise, it looked perfectly clean! Ya gotta love these new plastic gas tanks!

Under hood lighting for 850/V70 V70-XC70 2001

The CPS plug connector is directly under the distributer (1998 and earlier models).

I like the idea of using "Volvo" parts from a P&P whenever possible. Remember, 2 lights are better than one when it is dark out.
Have fun on Vacation,

My 01 V70 does not have a distributor (at least in the conventional sense). I'm really clueless as to how the coil packs (on each cylinder) know when to fire. I'm sure there has to be some sensor to tell the main computer when to fire the coils, but where is it???? Thanks for the help Klaus.
