S80's computer replaced - now there's a strong sulfer smell and car runs rough... S80

I brought my wife's 2001 S80 in to have the throttle sensor recall taken care of. The dealer could not get the software update completed on the original ECU, so they replaced it. Drove the car home (10 miles) and it seemed ok. Next time I tried to start it, it would not turn over. Message displayed "Start prevented, try again". Tried another key and got it started. My wife tried to take my daughter to a soccer game. Car started to run rough and stink like eggs/sulfer. She turned around and parked it in the garage. I could not believe how badly the car smelled of sulfer.

Any ideas what is going on here? Is it safe to drive this car to the dealer or is it possible that damage is being done to the catalytic converter?

Call the dealer and have them tow it back and fix it. It shouldn't cost you a dime. Your car is running over-rich which will not hurt the cat unless you keep running it like that. And have both keys in the car so they can reset the security module.

S80's computer replaced - now there's a strong sulfer smell and car runs rough... S80

I did just what Klaus suggested. I called the Volvo dealer, they had a flatbed come out and get the S80. They called this morning and said it is either a bad plug or a coil pack - codes say that there is a misfire on cylider #6. My issue is what are the chances that a plug or coil pack would go bad right at the same time they replaced the ECM (computer) on the car?

The car is due for plugs, but I don't want the Volvo dealer to replace them as I am sure it would cost an arm and a leg. I've changed plugs on an 850 in the past - no big deal. However, I remember the T6 as having some hardware going across the top of the engine that may making getting that top cover off so I can get at the plugs difficult. Anyone have input as to the quickest way to change plugs? Also, given that it is a turbo I understand plug choice is important. Which brand plugs should I use and can I get them at most auto parts stores?

Not looking forward to picking up the S80. My concern is they are going to try to charge me for sending out the flatbed and doing the testing on the car. I just don't have the cash for all this right now.

      Thanks in advance for input.

Did you ask them about both sets of keys not working?
Misfire on #6? Usually it is #3-5 where it is hotter under the cover. If the computer box is anywhere near the wiring for the coils, I would question if the wires were disturbed when the ECM was replaced.
If you look at the rear of the owner's manual for sparkplugs, you will find a reccomendation for Champion plugs which you can get at any parts store. They will also have coils for around $50 or less.

I suggest getting a cheap code scanner from the autoparts store so you can look up and delete codes. Most stores will let you borrow a scanner, free.

Another thought - is it common for coils to go out on a car with 85,000 miles? My old 850 has about 250K on the clock and it has not had a coil replaced...

How many coils are there on a T6?

Thanks for your input. Outside of plugs I will look to sponsors of this site for items to fix this beast...

Your car has "coil over"s, which means there is a coil for every spark plug. To remove the sparkplug, you must first remove the coil, usually 1 bolt, and then remove the spark plug.
The 850's had but one coil, and plug wires from a distributer. You S80 also doesn't have a distributer, everything is managed electronically.

              Klaus,

You are a ROCK STAR!!! I really appreciate your help! So I am getting the standard Volvo replacement plugs. Are these the 3 prong ones? Curious what the gap is or do you need to gap OEM plugs? I know you said I could use Champion, but I absolutely hate them (long story)...

Have you seen anything online that shows what the process is to change plugs on a T6? As I recall, there are tubes that cross the top of the engine. Do I have to remove these so I can get the cover off to get at the plugs?

              Thanks for your help.

Turbo plugs have just one prong. The NAs have 3 prong and cannot be gapped. If you get Volvo plugs, then the gap should already be correct.

I don't like the S80, so I have never been under the hood. Good luck, I hope you have a torx driver or two to get the cover plate off.
