Hard starting, idles rough 850 1996

Car was running fine, then today it was hard to start and it idles very rough. Seemed to run decent at driving speed. Any ideas. Will an air mass sensor do this?

I checked the air mass sensor today. When unplugged car started an and idled fine, as soon as I plugged it in it stalled. Some time the car would start and run fine, but then it would surge or stall, at highway speed it was ok, but almost always stalled when you slowed to a stop. I have a new sensor coming, hopefully that will solve the problem.

A bad AMM will throw a code. Unplugging it will throw a code, but if it starts and idles nicely while unplugged and the sysmptoms come back after plugging it in then the AMM needs to be cleaned or replaced. Driving the car without the AMM plugged in is not possible.

I would check for a loose vacuum hose, or a leak in the hose from the air cleaner to the throttle body.
Have you checked the PCV lately?

let it idle rough for 4-5 min for fault code 850 1996

If your Check Engine light isn't on yet, let it idle for about 4-5 minutes. Some of the fault codes (like "short term fuel mixture too weak/lean") won't register until the problem is constant for a certain time (I think 3 minutes). A bad air mass meter would probably register a Check Engine code of some variety.

Old school says unplug the AMM and if car runs better (or less crappy), look further at the AMM.

there have been many postings about this lately.....perhaps you can post what fixed your car.

the usual suspects are the mass air meter, cam postion sensor, loose vacuum lines or air intake hoses...could also be moisture on really old plug wires or worn out spark plugs. I would have the fault codes checked (some auto zones will do for free) and then look the code up in a repair manual. If no codes, I would check the plugs and all the lines....

Mass air meters are about 180 bucks as are the cam sensor....both very easy to replace and cause problems like what your having.
