Started and stalled, twice. V70-XC70 1999

I started my car after it was sitting in the parking lot for about 30 minutes.
I started it and it shut off.
Started again. Shut off.
Started again and needed the accelerator to keep it going.
Then, coming to stops, the idle would bounce up and down, between 800 and 1000.
No CEL or any other light came up.
I've only owned old Volvo's, and this is a turn off.
When I got home, I started it again and it was fine.
Any ideas?
Vacuum leak, software update needed?
Would cleaning the throttle body, mass airflow sensor, idle control something help?
Where are they located?

My uneducated guess would be a vacuum leak. Unmetered air entering the intake manifold will trigger a lean condition for the O2 sensor, that causes the ECU to leave the injectors open longer which will foul the plugs. Couple that with a colder engine and that will be much too rich.

No codes with the above scenerio, because the ECU thinks it is doing the right thing.

CEL came up so I brought it to autozone. They scanned it and it was P0172. Running rich at bank 1.
      Maf sensor or o2 sensor?
      What do you think?
I bought some maf cleaner and probably will clean it today, disconnect the battery and clear the CEL. And see if it comes on again.

Cleaning the MAF is good, but will not solve your problem. You need to check every vacuum line around the intake manifold and find the leak.
Make sure you also tighten the air intake at the throttle body and the air cleaner.

Know any tips for finding a leak?
Or should I just run the car and listen for hisses?
And, I'm getting terrible gas mileage.

Butane is always good. So is a spray bottle of water - soak the elbows, get water at the bottom if the injectors, check the intake manifold gasket, any air hose connections, the vacuum tree, and the list goes on.
