I have had no luck programming the remote on my 95. I can't get the dash led to come on and nothing else seems to be working. Could it be the receiver? I hate to pull my glove box out because I have a cd changer mounted in it adding to the chore. Is there an alarm relay somewhere that I could check. Its a 95 t5r. I have a 93 that the keyless works on so what all do I have to switch out?

There are 2 alarm/remote relays under the dash, driver's side. Go here and pick up the online manual, it is free and no virus:

There is a section on the alarm system worth reading.

If your 1995 is like my 1995 was, the red led flashes when the car is key locked. It never did flash when trying to program the remote, so I put the remote in a drawer and relyed on the simple key. The key will set the alarm and unlock the doors when needed - no batteries and no bulk in the pants pocket!

I tried and the alarm with the window down and it did not work. I went to the trunk lock and stuck my key and and it wouldn't turn, after a few good wiggles it turned to where it is supposed to be. I tried the window down thing and unlocked the door and the alarm went started sounding. Still no luck with the remote, here is what I am doing so tell me if I'm doing something wrong.
      1. Get in the car and lock the doors( windows up).
      2. Turn key from off to pos II 5 times.
      3. Pressing lock button on remote.
      4. Turn key to off.
      5. Looking disappointed when it doesn't work

I just re-read your post. Does the trunk lock not work when you lock the doors? If so, that is the culprit. The hood and trunk must be locked for the remote to work, and if the trunk doesn't lock electrically it needs to be repaired.
The key in the door is supposed to lock all 4 doors and the trunk. Then the blinking led is supposed to blink every few seconds.

Watch the red LED on the dash after turning the key to posII 5 times. If it is going to work, the light should come on. If it is a steady light, when you push the remote button, the light should blink rapidly.
If not red led, it won't work. Either the relay(s) is shot or the transceiver is shot. My dealer told me mine was a bad transceiver and forget about it. Cost was/is an option, besides the added bulk in my pocket.

Can you set the alarm with the key? Personally, I would advise against using the remote anyway. It's a great device to help thieves locate your car in a parking lot if they get your key somehow. Lots of people lose their cars that way.

Should there be an audible chirp from the thing on the firewall? all of my volvos have had this but I have never heard any noise from them though.

That "thing" on the engine side of the firewall is the alarm horn. Those horns tend to fail from lack of use. To test it, unplug the wire and then run a hot wire from the battery and see if it makes a lot of noise :) It is probably corroded internally and will not sound.

Does the dash led blink when you lock the car? If it does, try this: roll down the driver's window, lock the car with the key, then reach in and open the door from the inside. The system is supposed to sound the alarm, unless the hood was not completely closed when you locked the car which keeps the alarm disabled.

If you have a Volvo key it would not be hard to find the matching Volvo unless you were in a parking lot full of Volvos. Besides in a parking lot environement the range is very limited. I do not think that lots of people have lost their cars that way.

Actually, my 850 key only says "Ymos" on one side and "Made in UK" on the other. Obviously, I don't have the remote handy so I don't know about that. I suppose another Volvo officianado might recognize the key, but the ordinary car thief doesn't usually go for Volvos anyway, early '90s Camrys are so much easier with a shaved key.

As for the remotes, you'd be surprised. I read police reports every day: a common scenario is that a thief goes into an exercise place, lifts a wallet/purse/keys from a locker, and off they go. Why make it easier for them?
