1998 S70 Is 23 MPG normal? S70

Hi guys,
I'm just out of a 2001 S-60 T5 with a manual shift, and into a 1998 S70 base model with an automatic. With the S-60, I was getting 29 MPG in the city and with my S70, I'm only getting 23. Is this normal? The car has no codes, and runs really well. I'm not hard on the accelerator, either. The shifter is in the "economy" setting. I'd be interested to hear what others are getting for fuel consumption with their S70's. Thanks!!

Rob

I have a 99 S70 GLT Turbo and I get 30 - 32 on the highway and 24-26 in town. I use oem plugs, filters etc and have found I do best if the tires are a couple of pounds higher than recommended.

That mimics my 1998 V70R.

Things to check for:

Clean air filter
5 or 10W30, synthetic with a Mann filter
Tranny flush
Proper tire pressure from the gas cap lid, plus 5psi.
New OEM spark plugs.

Jack up the car, blocking the opposite wheels, the tranny in N, and no parking brake applied. Spin the wheels forward and check for brake noise. This is especially true for the rear wheels where the brake shoes can fall and rub.

You might want to spend $100 for a good alignment.

If the car has new tires, wait 5K miles for the rubber to stop squirming.

Don't forget to change the cabin air filter.

Also some tires are more economical than others re. rolling resistance S70

Some new ultra-efficient tires have been introduced for hybrid cars (and maybe for the huge pickups whose mileage the manufacturers are desperately trying to improve), but I don't know if they are available in sizes for the S70. Also I have no idea how they perform in wet, braking, handling, etc. compared to older technology tires.

I have a 98 S70 GLT (low pressure turbo). My mileage has consistently been 22 to 23 mpg for mixed hwy & city. I have tried both econ & the sport mode and have not noticed any difference.

The one thing I have not tried is going higher octane (I always use 87 Chevron or 76 station gas).

1998 S70 Is 23 MPG normal? 1999 V70 5-speed about the same S70

Not an exact match, but for the family 1999 V70 NA engine with manual trans:
Interstate: about 29-30 mpg
Town in summer: 25 mpg
Town in winter: 22 or 23 mpg

Stop-and-go driving in winter is deadly to fuel economy, and deadly with regards to wear and tear we have found.

I have a T-5 model S70, so not an exact match either.

In town, I get about 19 mpg. Highway, i usually get between 28-sometimes 30 if I go easy. Mixed driving (like back & forth to work for me, some stop & go and some country roads) 23 sounds about right, but then again mine is a turbo. Really, I've discovered, my car's mileage really depends on the kind of driving you are doing and that there's not much that you can really do about it short of REALLY watching your foot.

Agreed. I used to get like 19 in the city and 25 on the highway. I bought a Scangauge 2 and now i get 21-22 in the city and 28+ on the highways

your right foot is the main factor in determining mileage
