V70 Camshaft Position Sensor V70-XC70 1999

I need some help. I have a 1999 V70 AWD with the 2.4T engine. Today the CEL activated. Pulled code P0014. Camshaft position timing over advanced or system performance. I am told that I will need to replace the camshaft position sensor. Where is it? Is this a hard repair? Car has 142000+ miles on it. Timing belt and tensioner changed at 100000. Have not been able to find specific info from other posts.

Not difficult. The CPS is located on the driver's side and on the end of the exhaust cam(top of the valves). About 2-3 inches in diameter. A torx driver is needed to get it off/on.

      Klaus,

The fault was camshaft position. Do you think the sensor is bad?

I don't think the Tbelt jumped a tooth after this many miles, and there seem to be too many CPSs that send erroneous messages. It is an easy replacement and not too costly.

    Hi,

These engines really need clean oil at all times. Synthetic is a near must. The Variable Valve Timing assembly can and will clog with filth. This unit is controled by an oil pressure solenoid on the camshaft cover. The inlet screen here is the first place to check for debris. I would switch to Mobil 1 and change it every 3000 miles. Use only quality filters. These cars are not beaters. If you want a beater, get a 240. Otherwise keep up with the maintenance.

Clear the code and see if it returns. Keep your wallet in your pocket for now, and put synthetic ATF in the transmission and steering gear instead.
