I had been focused on the left side of the engine (where the little diagnostic boxes are). Yesterday I opened the hood to look for possible vacuum leaks or broken vacuum hoses, and immediately noticed a gaping hole in the flex hose between the air cleaner/air mass meter and the throttle. I am surprised the darn thing even ran! I replaced it (thank God U Pull It is open on Sundays!) and tossed the old one in the garbage. It was not until this morning that I pulled the old hose from the garbage can and noticed that it was soft and pliable, so it did not broke by itself. Upon closer inspection I could see the telltale gnawing signs, a *%^*^%*& squirrel! Well, fortunately it did not chew on the wiring harness.
The ride to work this AM was smooth, enjoyable, and the wagon idles perfectly now. Thanks to all for your good suggestions. Now if you can tell me how to keep the squirrels away from the car!
Best regards
Charlie
