Was transmission butchered by the oil change? 850 1994

I have a question. My wife took a car to the oil change palce and they checked the oil in A/T and found it brown, so they cchanged it. I called later and and found out that they open the drain plug from the pan and then drained the oil with engine off. Then they connected ATF supply pump line into dipstick filler with drain plug off and started ATF inflow and then started engine, ATF was coming in,(and probably straight out) they worked a shift through all positions for about 45 seconds and stopped the engine, closed the plug, filled the transmission to the required level and started again. Added a bit more and that was it. I am afraid that by doing this way they have butchered my transmission. The ATF is red now, it shifts fine, but it is, probably, not too long before it will start failing, right?

Any thoughts on what I should do. Not much, I guess, the damage is done.

Thanks.

Wow, where did you find an oil change place that actually knows how to flush a tranny properly.

What you have described is the exact procedure (form Volvo) for flushing the transmission. No damage, no problem.

      Volvo procedure really? 850 1994

I thought Haynes manual describes Volvo procedures. Basically, you drain from the drain plug. Then, you put it back on. You then remove the battery and the other craps and open the line from the radiator to AT. Then, you add some ATF. Then start the car and pump the ATF out. Repeat.

If pumping the ATF out through the drain plug is ok, why neither Volvo nor Haynes do it that way? It's definitely much easier for sure.

I won't do it this way myself. I've been using the modified way of draining through the top radiator hose.

Re: Was transmission butchered by the oil change? 850 1994

Thank you for answering my message. The reason I asked, is that they had the drain plug open, so all oil can drain and at the same time they were filling new ATF through oil dipstick filler, they didn't connect ATF supply to any radiator lines. I thought that when you pour oil through the dipstick tube it goes straight into the pan, and because pan drain plug was open, it was coming straight out, so transformer didn't actually pumped in any oil. They worked the shift through all position to make sure that all gears drain.

Well, it is good to know that experts think that it was done properly.

      Thank you all again.

OK maybe that was not the exact "Volvo procedure" but the point is that the engine is ran and the transmissions pump is used to pump the oil out. That won't hurt anything. I'm sure there are many takes on the job, bottom line is you want clean (total) fluid when you are done.

I am not an expert here, but I understand that since there was no load on the gears (idling car) there would be no damage to the transmission even if it worked for a short time with little or no oil.
