Rattle in dash and First Impression S70 2000

Purchased a 2000S70GLTSE about two months ago. Love the car: it's my first

Volvo. Seats are without a doubt the most comfortable I've been in, the sound system is terrific, engine shifts smoothly and most important it's the first car I've owned that I feel safe driving. The only issue I have is that there is an annoying rattle(ALMOST METTALIC LIKE) coming from the front dash. One time it comes from the passenger side the next from the driver's

side and then best of all both sides. It seems to occur as the weather

gets colder(I live in New England) and when I go over bumps on secondary

roads(30-40 mph) or manhole covers etc. Brought it to the dealer and of course the rattle wasn't alive and kicking that particular day. Wouldn't

trade the car(like it too much) but nonetheless it is pretty annoying and in particular after spending over $30,000. Has anyone any idea what this could be? It seems when the temperature gets above 40-45 it totaly goes away. That's why I didn't discover the problem until now.

Thanks Mike

Re: Rattle in dash and First Impression S70 1999

My S70 had an annoying rattle when I bought it too (~19,000 miles.) It turned out to be the glove box. Open the glove box door when you're on a bumpy road and have your passenger press on the bottom surface of the box - that isolated my car's rattle. The solution: remove the box (you don't have to removed the glove box door) and cram some packing foam around the glove box support. Hard to describe, but you'll see what I mean once you have the box out of the way. Volvo had the right idea - the box has foam tape in the problem area - they just didn't use enough foam. 12,000 miles later (on horrid Michigan roads) and my glove box is still silent...

    Good luck and happy holidays!

Re: Rattle in dash and First Impression S70 1998

      Mike,

Did the same thing on my '98. You can get self-adhesive weatherstripping at any good auto parts store. Line the entire contact surface of the support (horizontal & vertical).

Also, I adjusted the top of the dash. There are eleven (11) torx screws:

      - 1 behind each side defogger vent

      - 2 behind center vent

      - 1 under each speaker grille

      - 2 behind driver side vent

      - 1 behind passenger side vent

      - 2 above glove box door

The vents and speaker grilles pull out. But, be careful and work slowly or you may mar the surface of the vent and/or dash.

Make sure that both ends are aligned, seams are even and all screws are torqued properly.

We've had -15 to -25 degree cold in Michigan, and the car is squeak and rattle free.

      Enjoy.

      Bryan

        Bryan:

Thanks for the info. As I mentioned in another message, my car has a real persistent rattle coming from behind the left side air vent. If you don't mind, please elaborate on how to pull the air vent out. I stared at it for a couple of minutes and I had no idea what to do. Given its design and the way it's mounted, I'm sure I'll damage the edge if I try to pry it along the edge. The horizontal slats (or whatever the right term for it) are not fixed. I'm afraid I might break it if I try to pull them. I'd appreciate if you'd offer additional insight. Thanks.

Re: Rattle in dash and First Impression S70 1998

          Marcos,

Hope you had a good holiday.

The information I presented is based on the Haynes manual for the 70 series. In it, he states to use a "card" as protection by placing it against the dash and under the small flat screwdriver as you "prise" (pry?) the vent out.

I used a piece of veneer wood and removed all three vents without difficulty or damage. I also used a small bladed screwdriver and pried the vents from one of their corners.

Other bricksters feel that the Haynes manual is not very good. But, for me, it has more than paid for itself. If you want one, go online t:o: www.haynes.com.

The only one currently available is for the UK models. But, since we also use a type of English, it really works OK.

          Best of luck,

          Bryan

Re: Rattle in dash and First Impression S70 2000

Bryan, Thanks for your reply. I think this may be it because at times the

whole dash rattles. Unfortunately I have two left thumbs when it comes to this sort of stuff, so I am going to the dealer with a lot of info and knowledge I didn't have before. Given that I only have 4000 miles on my

car the dealer WILL fix the problem. Thanks to all that responded. I will

let you know the outcome. Mike 2000 S70GLT

Try to splash washer fluid when you have the rattle and see if this will get it away for a while. If it works you probably have to reinstall the windshield in order to eliminte some gaps or whatsoever. It did work for mine before. Good luck and let us know.

Re: Rattle in dash and First Impression S70 2000

I did have a squeek from some plastic guides that rubbed

against the windshield. It looks like they are used to

position the windshield when it is installed. Would only

      squeek when cold.

From the interior, site down the A piller (either side).

Slightly to the left of the A piller, between the

glass and back of the dash assembly were small gray plastic

sheets about 6 dm wide and 5 mil thick. They just barely

rubbed the glass and would resonate. There is one on each

side. I cut the plastic back using a razor blade (not easy)

and eleminated half the squeeks in my car.

Note my S70 was a Jan 97 build date so this may have been

      an early production 'thing".

I wish you were right! :) My V70 was built in June 1998, but it rattles and squeaks just like you and others describe. The most annoying is the one which comes from the left side air vent. It rattles to the slightest bump/hole on the road. It went on for months. I finally couldn't stand it any more, and took the car in to the dealer a month or also ago. I was also told that rattles were covered under the warranty for only 12 months. They went ahead, and told me they did something and it's free of charge. The car rattled just the same as soon as I drove off from the dealer.

I have a similar rattle in my 98, sounds a bit like some

component in the ducting for the air vents. I have not

found a solution but have not really looked. It is definatly

    worse when it is cold.

Oh, rattles are covered under the warranty for 12 months.

my 95 850m has a rattle when I use the heat or it is above 80. It is very annoying. I have taken apart the dash ands used a lot of felt tape to try to get rid of it. It works for about 6 months and then I have to put some more in. Make the dealer fix it under warranty.
