check engine light after cleaning throttle body 850 1994

OK...I just cleaned the throttle body and flame trap on our 94 non turbo 850 (automatic). It needed it.

Anyhow, after I get it put back together the "check engine" light comes on and stays on (even tried shutting car off and restarting). I've looked for the obvious wrong rehooking of stuff (doesn't look real possible), looked for loose connections, could not find any.

Could the light have come on when things were unhooked and just doesn't know that they've been put back together??

Advice--Recommendations??

Thanks

Tom Marlowe

Agreed with Tony that you should read the code and then clear it.

I didn't have any problem after cleaning the throttle body. However, I had an engine light on a couple of times about 5K miles after the first time I replaced the flame trap (after I took ownership at 158K miles). The code was something like "EGR flow fault." After the second oil change and another flame trap replacement about 10K miles ago, the engine code has not come back since.

So, I guess it may be the flame trap housing didn't completely sealed the first time. The flame trap was half clogged when I replaced it the first time.

If the car is running good, don't be too concern. Let us know what the code says. Good luck and Happy New Year!

      Got it fixed!!!

I did a search of the archives, found a site w/fault codes, went to Bay 13 and this morning fixed it!

The code flashing was 1-2-1 Mass Airflow Signal. I cleared it and it did NOT return.

Car runs great now. No more sticky/freezing throttle.

THANKS This board is a real life saver!

    Tom,

Did you have the ignition on at any time during the maintenance...otherwise it's odd that a code would log if all you connections are correct.I have discovered it doesn't take much for a code to log. Read the code/codes that caused the lamp to come on would be a good place to start. Then clear the codes, inturn re-setting the lamp. See if it returns...

Is there any way of clearing faults on OBD2 cars (850 1996) other than using Volvo diagnostic unit?

        Aussie,

No, not after 1995 models, however I believe the newer models allow you to turn off the "service" reminder lamp...
