New info on my hard start problem, still unresolved. My car suddenly put on the check engine light and when I checked the code it said the following:
PO335 "Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction"
What does this mean? Where will I find this Crankshaft Pos. Sensor? Can I fix this or is it very expensive?

Also I need to replace the electrical portion of my ignition switch. What is the key to installing it correctly? Anyone have any directions as the one I bought at Volvo came in an empty box and the sales person was not the least bit helpful.

I need to resolve these problems quickly, any help deeply appreciated.

To replace the ignition switch electrics, you need to remove the clamshell around the steering wheel. There are 4 torx screws, from the bottom side. Two are easy, the other two are recessed about 4 inches!

Once the clamshell is off, remove the two screws that hold the black electrical connector in place. Do NOT remove any wires! Just unplug the black box and replace the aluminum switch.

Thanks for info. Got new part. Seems to have movement or rotation to it. How do I make sure it is lined up properly? I put it in once out of the box and could not get car to start. Key locked up inside the switch and I had to remove the part I just bought before I could get the key out. Help always appreciated.

I guess you are talking about the ignition switch. It only fits on one way and the key has to be out of the cylinder while putting the switch in.
You can 'test' the new switch while it is out of the car by turning it with a screwdriver. Just make sure it is in position "0" when you put the switch in the slot.

While the plastic is off the steering column, look for a small cable that comes up to the key lock. Give the end of the cable a drop of oil, not WD40, and make sure it moves easily. That is your lockout switch and it can get dry and sticky and now is a good time to help it.

Hi, I did all the steps you suggested. When I turn the key, every position works and does what it should except when I turn it all the way to start the car, then it does nothing. It is just dead in that position. I purchased the part new from our local Volvo dealer as I tried this before with an aftermarket product which did not work either. Any ideas where to go from here. I am getting rather desperate as I don't know what could cause this. Thanks

Did you also change the rpm sensor/ crank pos sensor?

If so, time to check the wiring from the battery to the starter.

No I haven't changed either of those. Car starts (with difficulty) when I put back the old ignition switch, so I can't figure out why the new one doesn't work.
You really can only put it in one way for the key to match.

But, I desperately need photos of the location of the sensors you mentioned, so if you or anyone reading this post can reply with photos that will speed me along. Thanks again.

The crank position sensor is under the distributer cap, where all of the spark plug wires are.

As to your ignition switch, check the part numbers. You might have been given the wrong one.

The camm sensor is on the drivers side of the engine mounted on the end of the rear camshaft. Not too hard to replace but some folks have had problems with the seal leaking. Should be around $60. The ignition switch is also not too hard to replace but you will need a 4 inch long #25 TORX driver to take the covers off the steering column. Pull the steering wheel out all the way first.

thanks for the info. I am going to attempt to replace the crankshaft position sensor, but am not sure where it is on my car. Have removed the air filter box and can see the bell housing on the driver side of the car. There are two possibilities that could be the sensor and would really appreciate it if anyone out there has a photo of the actual part and its location so I will remove the right part. Of the two possibilities I can see one is located closer to the firewall and one closer toward the front of the car. Thanks for the help.

Hi, the sensor in my 850/94-20v is located behind the distributor cup, round dia 80mm fixed with 2 torx only, easy to replace, 80eur. it's known to fail. check/clean first the connector though.
mine was stopping the car randomly for two week before final quit.
