To buy, or not to buy? V70-XC70 2001

Looking to get back into the Volvo family. This board gave me an amazing amount of help with my last one.

I found a '91 V70 Wagon for sale. I checked it out and it was quite clean, on the surface, for its age. It appeared to fit my family's needs exactly. After checking it out and liking it, I took it to a dealer (Seattle Volvo) and paid them to check it out.

It turns out that the repair parts came to about the same price as the original asking price.

I turned it down. I forgot to mention that it was a family member selling it for the owner (details of which I have full faith.

I've read quite a bit about the pitfalls from this year, but I think I can get some concessions. I'd like some opinions.

From memory, the car needed tie-rods, one strut had issues, one CV joint cover was split and leaking oil, break-pedal sensor was dead (cruise control would be dead), oil appeared to be leaking from the tranny where the drive shaft comes out (my translation), and timing belt and other 90k-services that were due.

Oh, and it's throwing the code for the catalytic converter.

They wanted $4500 and the repairs (mostly parts, but some labor) were over $4k.

I asked if they'd take $1500 for it. I haven't had a reply yet and I didn't give a solid offer.

All of this transpired before I checked this site for reviews. Now I'm a'scared.

What would you do?

I can do a lot of the stuff on it, but my time is precious due to other commitments. I'm good with spending the $3k over the purchase price if it'll take care of the majority of the problems.

I should hear tomorrow whether they'll take $1500 and then I need to make my decision. Before I get there I'd like to hear some opinions.

So, thoughts?

To buy, or not to buy? V70-XC70 2001

    See this thread:

You don't list the mileage but if one strut is bad you need both. And new spring seats.

If the boot on the CV is split you're better off replacing the whole thing. These things are highly precise inside and the tiniest bit of contamination will ruin them. If it's been leaking (in AND out) for any amount of time you need a whole shaft or you'll just end up doing it later anyway. The perfect time to do this is when the strut is out.

The oil leaking around the driveshaft seal is not a big deal in and of itself (the seal is easy to replace - again easiest to do it when the strut is out as well) but the bigger issue here is the effect of low transmission fluid level on that transmission, which we all know to be suspect due to the model year.

TWC code could get very expensive for you.

Timing belt quickly turns in to a lot of money - belt, tensioner, rollers, water pump? (and if you do water pump you might as well change the thermostat and flush the coolant for good measure, and on a car this old you might think about new rad and heater hoses while the coolant is out)....

If you're a DIYer and you've got some time and patience and you don't have to spend too much money to get it this could maybe be a good car for you. But I personally would run away from it.

None of this is a lot of work for someone with mechanical aptitude. Your logic is faulty…The way you are adding up parts and labor, your cost will be zero for this car…They will actually owe you money. The fact is, EVERY used car will need parts and attention. There is a reason why owner is selling it. If they were problem and trouble free, they would be kept. One can get most parts over the internet. They are no more expensive than parts for domestic cars. Some problems may be annoying or cosmetic and one can live with them. I don’t mess with leaky CV boots. I wait until they go bad and than I replace the entire shaft with both joints. You can get this for around % 85. Why mess with rubber boots? Bad struts? So what? If it does not affect front end alignment, I wouldn’t care. Small oil leak? Most cars have them…I think the asking price is very fair…
