Borderline overheating C70 2000

All,

I had an issue last week where the temp gauge dropped stayed nearly at the bottom for about 20 - 30 minutes then up to just under mid-range where it normaly is at..thought to myself...looks like a thermostat stuck open... Bought a new one from Volvo and replaced it along with the ECT since I too had the CEL come on at the same time...

After replacing both...now the temp gauge goes nearly to the red line and fluxuates between the very top white line and the middle of the two red lines...?

I replaced the water pump, and belt tensioner since I was in there, and same issue...?

This evening I notice that when the electric fan turns on...the temp gauge pegs out...when and the fan cuts off....the temp gauge falls back down to the normal mid-range-position...

Any ideas?

Air lock?
Fan relay?

2000 C70....140K Miles...

Thanks all...!

Frank

Bad ECT sensor? You need to get one of those infared heat guns and check the temp of the thermostat housing. When the ECT sensor gets too hot, that signals the ECU to turn on the engine fan to cool things down, not get hotter?????

Your gauge may also be a little suspect. It has a compensation board so the needle doesn't move much.

You can check the Ohms on the ECT sensor. Just make sure the key is off when you unplug the sensor :>)

    Readings should look like this:

    68F - 2800 ohms
    104F - 1200 ohms
    212F - 150 ohms

      Hi Klaus,

...that was it...stopped by Volvo and picked up a new one...replaced it. All is fine... I also sprayed down the front of the engine and alternator area with simple green and rinsed it too...

I'm returning the one I got from FCP back to them...

      Thank you!

      I appreciate it!!

      Frank

How My ECT Read... C70 2000

Sounds like a crazy bad gauge... or something much more serious.

Even leaking and blowing coolant from a failed Head Gasket, my gauge rarely even went above "normal"

From my test over the weekend.

        4.96 -- Cold engine
        0.69 -- 1/8
        0.43 -- 1/3
        0.28 -- 1/2 (Normal 3:00)
0.16 -- 1/2 (when cooling fan came on)
0.19 -- 1/2 (after extended high rpm run)

There is only one coolant temp sensor, the ECU and gauge both use it. I don't think I have ever seen a failed gauge, but lots of ECT sensors going bad.

The gauge will (supposed to) only go towards hot when the coolant is REALLY hot and probably too late to help. When it moves, it will almost jump to the red.

This is when I like my old technologically inept 220. You even know when the thermostat opens.
