AC problem, not normal suspects 850

I finally got around to adding a can of R143a and to my surprise, the AC compressor kicked in and actually started to cool down the car. Less than 5 minutes later, the clutch kicked out and AC was off >:(

I got my stick out and pushed on the center of the clutch and NOTHING happened! The clutch is particularly rusted and probably hasn't been used in several years. SO, I pushed on the edge of the clutch and turned it about 1 inch and the clutch engaged! I did this several times and it is the only way to engage the clutch.

I didn't measure the clutch gap, but eye balling it, it looks pretty good for 160K miles. I was going to let the engine cool down before doing an actual measure.

BUT, turning the clutch to get it to engage is a new one for me. Remember, this is a "rescue" car and I cannot afford the expense of a compressor/clutch plus vacuuming out the system, etc.

Thanks

BTW, I will also post this on Matthews volvo site. I prefer talking to you guys.

Where is the solenoid to engage the clutch? maybe there's some binding/corroded
links or pivots that need a little touch of mystery oil?

    You could get lucky!

truly amazing to have the Klausmeister reach out for help. Sorry that my expertise is centered around replacing evaporators. I've been lucky with my clutches. No bread clips in my fleet!

Klaus, I am always amazed (and a little disappointed) when you are stumped and have to come to us for advice. We think you know everything Volvo and can't stand it when we find you are merely human. I wish I had some piece of wisdom to offer back to you.

Anyway, thanks for all your sound advice. David

I'd bet the thermistor in the temp cutoff switch is out of sorts. IIRC there are two wires for the temp switch on the compressor. Could have some corrosion in the connections at some point, have heard of many people deleting the temp switch all together, pairing that alongside the shim fix and you can be back on easy street. Of course....there is always that caveat of bypassing something there intended for safety, but my guess would be the temp sensor is out of tolerance?

If you chose to delete it, a butt splice and heat shrink should make a nice fix.

        Steve,
I think you are right! I started the car this morning and the AC worked for 20 minutes, until I was on a 30mph road. Yesterday, the engine was already hot when I added a can of R134a.

The temperature sensor is OUTSIDE of the compressor on this 1996!!! So it is also getting air from the radiator blown on it - totally brainless engineering.

So, I am trying to figure out which wires to cut and splice. I have no idea and Google search is of no help yet.

Shouldn't have to splice. As I recall, the temp sensor is added in line between the wire to the clutch and from the car with round bullet type connectors. Unplug and remove sensor, then plug directly to clutch.

Admittedtly its been a while since I've had the old chassis and tinkered around.

Klaus, found this in the archives, my apologies as I cannot distinctly remember the exact spot of picture of where it is on the 850.

also found this...understanding the V90 was a different engine and likely a different compressor I think the relative display of the AC comp will help ID the suspect switch.

            Keep us updated!

            Best,
            steve

AC all fixed and working well 850

              Thanks Steve,

That is exactly what I did to bypass the compressor temp problem. I did not leave the 2 temp sensor wires hanging, I plugged them into each other and zip tied it so it doesn't flop around. My big hands made it very hard.

Just to be sure, I also shimmed the clutch a little closer.

Now I have to check the coolant level, I probably don't have enough, but it does feel good to have some of the humid air purged from the cabin. I am also waiting to see how long it lasts, you never know with 850 evaporators.
