V70 wiper washer V70-XC70 2004

2004 V70 non-turbo 2.4 litre, 5 sp.

Yesterday the windshield washers (squirters) works. This morning nothing.

Had power to the washer pump motor when the rear washer switch was pushed. No power when the front washer switch was pulled.

Swapped hoses to get the front washer working.

A couple of questions;

-How does one pump supply 2 locations?
-I'm guessing the washer switches can't carry the full load of the pump.

Will be trying to sort out what isn't working. Would appreciate any insight.

I got this from Simon on the UK Volvo forum.

The pump has two outlets (on opposite sides for front and rear washers) and each pipe has a one-way valve. Depending which polarity is applied to the motor, the impeller will rotate clockwise or counter-clockwise which will force water thru one outlet or the other. The one-way valve prevents fluid being drawn back in thru the opposite outlet.

Very interesting, just like the window motors.

So, the question: Does the pump only work in one direction? Is the oneway valve staying closed for the windshield? Or is the switch on the stalk at fault? I am assuming there is only one fuse for the pump.

From what I can gather, there seems to be too many people replacing the pumps.

When I get my garage back the first thing I'm doing is put 12V to the pump then reverse the polarity.

The guy from the UK said there was an outlet on each side of the pump. Mine has 1 outlet going to a tee. From the tee lines go to front windshield/headlight washer and the rear windshield.

I still don't know how a tee can be made to selectively squirt front and rear.

I suggest using a small 9V battery, that should be good enough for a test. 12V might be overkill.

If there is only one outlet to the pump, the engineers have me by the short hairs. I can understand a T for the windshield and headlight washers.

Are you sure that a line didn't fall off and the fluid is now going to ground?

Sorry to take so long but life seems to get in the way.

Pulled the bumper cover off again to get at the front washer reservoir.

There is only one pump. I disconnected the 2 wire power plug to it. 12VDC directly I get the windshield washer, reverse polarity and I get the rear washer.

Everything works so the issue is between the washer switch and the pump.
When I pull the front wiper stalk the front wipers go through the cycle as normal just no washer. So not sure which washer front or rear uses reverse polarity and how it is reversed (relay is my bet)

Hunting for a stalk from a local wrecker then we'll see.

            thanks

Look closely, there are two pumps. IIRC the rear pump is higher on the fluid bottle than the front pump. The front pump is a pain to get to, but you need to check the plug and wires.

Check the fuses, it should be #16 in the engine compartment rated at 15A.

      V70 wiper washer V70-XC70 2004

      Hi Klaus,

Vadis shows 2 pumps beside each other right at the bottom passenger side of the tank. I have 1 where they show and the other indicated location is empty.

I had the bumper cover off and saw only the one pump, A 2 wire plug feeding the pump, wires for the level indicator and the feed power to both was the only wiring.

Is the 2nd pump inside the tank? Which side of the tank?

      cheers

        V70 wiper washer - no help V70-XC70 2004

That is too much for my brain cells. Only one pump for both systems? That would mean there has to be a split somewhere along the line to switch between the front and back. That is too much engineering. SO the question is, did the nozzles freeze up? Or did a hose come apart and now you are spraying the ground? Can you hear the pump when trying to wash - look at the inside switch/button?

        From http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=48672

Great information. The second line is for the rear washer. You're right, most aftermarket pumps have only one. In the same model year (2004) later VIN numbers (last 6 digits -127149 and beyond) went to a single pump which is A LOT for expensive than buying 2 pumps with the old design. Partsgeek has an OES(?) that arrived 2 days after I ordered it for $65. The Volvo dealer wanted $90. Hope this helps. OBTW, you saved me $200 in labor. Thanks.

Also, I had to PRIME the pump BEFORE reattaching the hoses to prevent an air lock in the pump. I know it sounds weird but after priming the pump, I immediately had fluid coming out of all washer nozzles.

          V70 wiper washer - no help V70-XC70 2004

          Hi Klaus,

No hose split, nozzles weren't frozen.

I could hear the pump run when the rear washer switch was triggered but not when the front was. No power at the pump when the front switch was triggered.

No VIN last 6 is 450618 so 1 pump but still unclear how the washers function separately.

The rear washer sprayed just the rear and the front washer sprayed just the windshield and the headlights (now disconnected and hoses capped off).

My washer pump is exactly like the one in the link.

I'll check the column switch etc.

          Still confused.

Will let you know. Won't get to it for a while have a new (8 week old puppy) and a new (1987) lathe (1100 lbs) in my garage that needs to go into my basement before my car fits in. It's winter and cold here right now.
