WHy such acceleration with light pedal applied S60

We've owned the 2002 S60 for 2.5 years and it always did this issue. It was my wifes daily driver but now it is my daily driver. The 2017 V50 T5 she now drives does not do this.

On the S60 it seems like the gas pedal is very, very ultra sensitive. When starting from a dead stop, you press it in and very quickly it will accelerate like a rocket and it is hard to smoothly take off. It is as if the turbo is engaging at a very low speed. Heck it almost jerks your head back but I have no problem with the V50 turbo.

The S60 has a K&N type air filter (dry washable filter). I've theorized that the air filter box being open, plus the filter type are at the heart of the issue.

No CEL, gas mileage is fine, runs well, etc. There are times when I am backing up the drive it hits that ultra acceleration and could be doing it when I am maneuvering between our other cars. Not a good thing.

Ideas appreciated.

Not sure if this applies to your car but the waste gate in the 850's turbo can be adjusted to come sooner. I wonder if the previous owner did something like this to the car.

You should be ashamed, making your wife drive that car for 2.5 years!

So the prior owner liked to go fast? I wonder what other mods he made. You could disconnect the battery for 30-60 minutes and cause the ECU and TCU to 'relearn' driving habits.

Will it present any problems if I disconnect the battery for that long?

Not for 2002. Your battery is in the trunk. Volvo suggests that you wait for 5 minutes after having the engine running before disconnecting the battery. Just remove the negative terminal and go have a long cup of coffee. Also a good time to clean both battery posts?

Having replaced the battery one time I know its location in the trunk.

The car hasn't been started today so I'll give a try at removing the negative cable..

Could be the result of the previous owners using polyurethane bushings for the transmission and engine mounts and or a possible ECU reflash from Polestar.

Are you 100% sure the TCV valve on the V50 is fine? It could be that the V50 is not getting as much boost due to a failing control valve. Maybe try a few 0-60 tests to see if the both cars perform as expected.

My 07 2.5T is sometimes sensitive and 'can' be annoying in traffic.

            Regards
            Steve

The V50 will fly like crazy when and only when you call upon it to fly. It is the acceleration in traffic that is the PITA on the V60.

On the S60, I'm not sure what the previous owner did but they were into performance. They rip some of the fins out of the drivers side heater vent to install a turbo boost gauge. So add in the K&N style air cleaner and the turbo gauge in all probability is wasn't a little old blue haired lady driver.

She liked the speedy take off but most of her driving was highway. Mine is around town, from stop light to stop light and it is not as much fun having to try and handle the take off.

I suspect it's programmed to do that to give the driver the impression that the car is very powerful.

I can remember Chevy Astro vans doing the same thing (though not to the same degree obviously.) It was no secret that the shape of the throttle linkage cam was intended to give a wide opening for the first part of the throttle movement. Now with electronic throttle bodies, it's even easier to mimic that behavior.

My daughter's Mazda3 acts the same as your S60. I hate it. It's damn near impossible to accelerate smoothly without jerking.

I agree. I am not a fan of the non-smooth acceleration. I guess to some people that like to take off like a bat-out-of-H. There are times when I am going backward up my 90 foot inclined driveway that I need to weave in and out of our 4 cars. That darn zealous acceleration on a light pedal is dangerous.

My wife's 2007 V50 is a much, much smoother acceleration. Is this acceleration on light pedal part of what it means on the IPD site when you have the submodel choice of Light Pressure Turbo?
