camshaft position sensor voltage supply V70-XC70 2004

I have a 2004 turbo charged XC70 that won't start. The scanner said crankshaft and camshaft position sensors. The manual said to check that the cmp is getting battery voltage on the end wire. I don't get battery voltage, I've checked a half a dozen times and variously get about 5 volts or no volts. This is with the key on and sensor disconnected, as measured by touching the wiring harness connector pin with the volt meter lead; and negative side of volt meter grounded. I get continuity from the connector pin to the corresponding computer pin. Any ideas as to why I'm not getting battery voltage where I should? thanks for any help and ideas. Jim

Has anyone else been under the hood lately?

Is it possible that a pin has pushed back in the connector, or is broken?

If you have doubt about your ground, you can check your ground by measuring resistance from your chosen ground point to the battery ground..

If I am going to check more than one voltage, I often add a clip on the ground meter probe so that I only have to worry about both leads making proper contact.

Also, check for a faulty lead if you have doubts.

BTW - my default position is that you measured correctly in the first place.

Hi Jim

You should measure the sensor at both sensor pins.

You cannot rely on random ground points for your meter.

The sensors are not supposed to get battery voltage. They fluctuate between 0-5 volts.

What code did you get?

Here are some of the solutions:

Repairing any electrical components, such as wiring, that have been damaged by leaking engine fluid, as well as repairing the source of the leak
Replacing bad camshaft sensors
Replacing bad crankshaft sensors
Repairing open or shorted camshaft position sensor harness
Replacing a faulty starter motor
Repairing or replacing a weak battery
Replacing a faulty starting system circuit

Keeping it running is better than buying new

Hello, Thanks for your reply to this problem. One point I'd like to clarify is that the camshaft position sensor is a three wire unit. The manual does say batt volt on one, signl, 0 to 5 vdc on the middle andthe third is a ground.

In your reply you mention not to expect battery voltage, but 0 to 5 vdc? Wanted to get that point clarified for my further understanding and trouble shooting this issue.

Thanks again! Jim
